Getting the 25-year-old central defender to extend his deal, which runs out next summer, is a top priority for Dortmund. However, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Liverpool keeping tabs on the German international, BVB are also preparing for the worst-case scenario.

Premier League Replacement

BVB have identified Chelsea’s Axel Disasi as a potential replacement should Schlotterbeck leave next summer.

The 27-year-old is surplus to requires at Chelsea and isn’t even training with the first team as it stands. Although Chelsea paid €45m for the Frenchman in 2023, he’ll be available for much less given the lack of playing time. What’s more, his €5m yearly salary is well within Dortmund’s financial range.

Disasi has previously played under current BVB head coach Niko Kovač during his time at AS Monaco. Now, a reunion could be on the cards should Schlotterbeck leave, or even if Niklas Süle leaves the club when his deal also runs out in the summer of 2026.

Germany set for crucial World Cup qualifiers: Current form and team news from Die Mannschaft https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/germany-set-for-crucial-world-cup-qualifiers-current-form-and-team-news-from-die-mannschaft/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/germany-set-for-crucial-world-cup-qualifiers-current-form-and-team-news-from-die-mannschaft/#respond Tue, 07 Oct 2025 13:46:52 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=104198 Heading into the October international break, Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany simply can’t afford to drop any more points. With games against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland, it sounds simple. However, having already lost to Slovakia in the group, Die Mannschaft are already playing catch-up. One more slip-up and they will be looking for favours from other nations to get something from Slovakia.

Current Form

Germany’s current form is dodgy to say the least. With one win in just five competitive matches, Die Mannschaft needs to put together back-to-back wins for the first time since November last year.

Germany has never played Luxembourg in a competitive competition before. Ranked 96th in the World, Germany will fancy their chances. However, the micro-states aren’t often on the back of a hammering these days. In recent internationals, they’ve managed wins against Sweden, though they are winless in five matches.

Germany have already played Northern Ireland this campaign, coming out as 3-1 winners. Prior to that, Northern Ireland have beaten the likes of Luxembourg and narrowly lost 2-1 in Copenhagen against Denmark.

Whilst the odds are clearly in Germany’s favour, they’re going to have to start getting wins under their belt.

Should themselves and Slovakia win their remaining games, top spot will be settled in Germany when the nations face off on the final matchday next month.

Team News

While the pressure is on Nagelsmann and Die Mannschaft, they’re going to have to win without the in-form Nick Woltemade, who has hit the ground running with Newcastle United.

The forward remains a doubt for Luxembourg due to flu-like symptoms. The most in-form national team forward right now, Germany will be hoping he recovers in time for the match in Belfast.

Elsewhere, veteran goalkeeper Oliver Baumann has withdrawn from the squad due to illness. In his place comes SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu, who earns his first senior call-up.

Germany host Luxembourg on Friday 10th, before traveling to Windsor Park in Belfast on Monday 13th.

Bayern Munich to battle with Liverpool and Real Madrid for Marc Guehi (25) next summer https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bayern-munich-to-battle-with-liverpool-and-real-madrid-for-marc-guehi-25-next-summer/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bayern-munich-to-battle-with-liverpool-and-real-madrid-for-marc-guehi-25-next-summer/#respond Tue, 07 Oct 2025 07:49:53 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=104152 As reported by Christian Falk, Bayern Munich will battle with Liverpool and Real Madrid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi next summer.

The 25-year-old England international was close to leaving South London in the summer transfer window when Liverpool thought they’d got their man. However, the deal fell through at the last minute, and Guehi stayed put.

Guehi’s current deal at Palace runs out next summer, and it’s expected that he won’t be looking to extend his contract.

With that in mind, unless someone comes in for him during the winter transfer window, Guehi will be one of the most sought-after free agents in the summer of 2026.

Max Eberl is a big fan of the Englishman, but the club couldn’t make a move this summer due to not being able to offload Kim Min-jae.

The South Korean is expected to leave at the end of the season, giving Bayern the chance to move in for Guehi, who would be considered top of their priority list.

Bayern will have to be savvy in their work, however. They lost out to Liverpool in the previous window for Florian Wirtz. What’s more, Real Madrid will also be looking to tempt the Englishman to the Spanish capital.

Bundesliga matchday 6 standings: Hamburg victorious, Bayern Munich march on, Leverkusen on track, and more. https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bundesliga-matchday-6-standings-hamburg-victorious-bayern-munich-march-on-leverkusen-on-track-and-more/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bundesliga-matchday-6-standings-hamburg-victorious-bayern-munich-march-on-leverkusen-on-track-and-more/#respond Mon, 06 Oct 2025 09:39:20 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=104103 Matchday 6 in the Bundesliga saw impressive victories for Hamburg, teams still searching for their first win, and much more. Here is your Bundesliga review and standings from matchday 6.

Hamburg Make Mince Meat of Mainz

Hamburg made it back-to-back home wins as they battered Mainz 05 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. HSV were on top from the first minute and found themselves 2-0 up after just nine minutes thanks to goals from Albert Sambi Lokonga and Rayan Philippe. Philippe would add to his first goal in the second half, bringing his tally for the season to three goals from six games. The forward had a failed move to Mainz in the summer and mocked the situation with his celebration by mimicking a phone call.

HSV head coach Merlin Polzin opted for a new 3-4-3 formation, and it worked a treat against a side that was so successful last campaign.

We’re progressing and one can see that in our play with the ball and against the ball. We’ve more steps to take, but one senses – and this is vitally important – that the team is finding out who they are and the connections are getting better. The players need to feel it on the pitch,” explained Polzin.

HSV move up to 9th in the Bundesliga, whilst Mainz drop to 16th.

Bayern Breeze Past Frankfurt

Ahead of this one, it was billed as Bayern’s first big test this season. However, when Bayern went 0-1 up after 17 seconds through Luis Díaz, it was anything but a real test.

Bayern once again dominated and showed just how powerful their forward line is this season. Vincent Kompany’s side went 0-2 before the break through a Harry Kane curled effort from 20 meters out. If you haven’t seen the goal already, I urge you to take a look.

Diaz added to his first-half goal late into the second half to make sure that Bayern go six wins from six games in the Bundesliga.

I don’t think these games should be used as a yardstick to evaluate the boys right now,Toppmöller insisted when conducting a post-match interview with Sky Germany after the match. “It’s important for us to know that we still have a little room for improvement in order to compete at this level.

No one has been able to keep up with Bayern at their level thus far [this year],” Toppmöller continued, adding special praise for Harry Kane’s distance effort that made it 0-2 in the 27th minute. “That was a typical Bayern goal and Harry Kane’s finish was simply world-class.”

For Frankfurt, it’s now 12 goals conceded in four games in all competitions. There’s no question that Frankfurt have an excellent team, but right now, their defensive displays will be worrying head coach Dino Toppmöller. Bayern stay top as Frankfurt drop out of the European places for the first time this season (7th).

Dortmund Leipzig Stalemate

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig played a rather dull 1-1 draw that was billed as “the battle of the Bayern chasers”. In fact, the final xG stats (Dortmund 0.88, Leipzig 1.05) illustrate that the final scoreline was even a little generous.

Dortmund remain undefeated this season ahead of their showdown with Bayern after the international break. Leipzig, meanwhile, continue their undefeated run since being battered by Bayern on opening night.

In truth, both teams will probably be satisfied with the draw as Dortmund and Leipzig stay 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Around The Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, FC Heidenheim still remains bottom following a 1-0 loss to VfB Stuttgart. The Swabians scored the winner just past the hour mark from time to add even more misery on Frank Schmidt’s side. Heidenheim stay bottom, whilst Stuttgart shoot up into 4th.

Bayer Leverkusen have put their early-season woes behind them as they go 5th with a 2-0 win against Union Berlin. It’s the first time that B04 has registered back-to-back Bundesliga wins this season as new head coach Kasper Hjulmand looks to be making a positive impact on his squad.

Borussia Mönchengladbach still remain winless going into the international break after a 0-0 draw against SC Freiburg. Despite that and amid all the administrative turmoil at Borussia Mönchengladbach, interim head coach Eugen Polanski has been given the green light to continue his audition on the sidelines.

There were also wins for FC Köln (0-1 vs TSG Hoffenheim), Werder Bremen (1-0 vs St. Pauli), and FC Augsburg (3-1 vs VfL Wolfsburg).

Germany squad announcement: winners and losers https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/germany-squad-announcement-winners-and-losers/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/germany-squad-announcement-winners-and-losers/#respond Thu, 02 Oct 2025 09:22:35 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=103931 Julian Nagelsmann has named his Germany squad ahead of this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland. For Germany, it’s been an unexpected and ropey start to qualifying, but they’ll be expected to win both games and get a grip of a group they should comfortably win. Here are your winners and losers from Nagelsmann’s squad announcement.

Winners

The first clear winner is Borussia Dortmund football club, who have had five players called up. This includes the reintroduction of Nico Schlotterbeck, who has been sidelined through injury since the beginning of the season.

In addition, Waldemar Anton, Felix Nmecha, Karim Adeyemi, and Maximilian Bier have all been nominated. It’s the perfect compliment from Nagelsmann as BVB have had a fantastic start to the season in all competitions. After what was a turbulent campaign last term, BVB and, in particular, their German players, look sharp, on form, and ready to give any team a game.

The second winner is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown, who has been called up to the senior squad for the first time. Previously a part of the Germany U21 set up, Brown had a fantastic debut campaign with Frankfurt last season and has continued to play a role this season. With full-back places up for grabs, Brown will fancy his chances to cement his place in Die Mannschaft.

Our final winner is RB Leipzig’s Ridle Baku, who has been called up for the first time since 2021. The right-sided full-back has featured in all of Leipzig’s games this season and provided one assist. In a similar position to Brown, Baku can give Germany something different with his pace in both defence and attack.

Losers

The first loser is Josha Vagnoman of VfB Stuttgart. Despite the Swabians’ mixed start to the campaign, the central defender has had a solid start to the season. The 24-year-old Hamburg native has yet to be called up to the senior team. Granted, he has some tough competition for a place in the starting 11, but perhaps he is slightly unfortunate not to get a call-up this month.

Our second loser is SC Frieburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. The 23-year-old has earned his place in the Freiburg starting 11 and is showing great potential. Nagelsmann appears to have the experienced Oliver Baumann alongside Alexander Nubel and Finn Dahmen right now. However, Atubolu is certainly knocking on the door.

Germany host Luxembourg on Friday 10th October, before traveling to Northern Ireland on Monday 13th October.

Bayern Munich gathering information on Juventus forward Dušan Vlahović https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bayern-munich-gathering-information-on-juventus-forward-dusan-vlahovic/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bayern-munich-gathering-information-on-juventus-forward-dusan-vlahovic/#respond Mon, 29 Sep 2025 10:18:27 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=103810 As reported by Christian Falk, Bayern Munich are gathering information on Juventus forward Dušan Vlahović.

Bayern are considering a move for a new striker next summer and already have the Serbian international on their watchlist. The 25-year-old moved to Juventus from Fiorentina in January 2022 and has gone on to score 62 goals for the Old Lady.

What makes Vlahović an even more attractive move is that he will become a free agent in June 2026.

With his high wages, it’s believed that Juventus will not be able to provide Vlahović with a fresh contract.

With this in mind, the Italian side may push to sell him in the upcoming winter transfer window, in order to get something from their star striker.

Bayern, of course, will not be the only side in Europe looking at securing the signature of Vlahović.

As per the report, Premier League duo Manchester United and Chelsea are also monitoring the situation.

With United forward Benjamin Šeško hardly setting the world alight, the Red Devils could look to bolster their options.

The transfer of Vlahović in the upcoming transfer windows will certainly be one to watch.

Bundesliga matchday 5 review: 10-goal game, historic records, crucial wins, protests, and more. https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bundesliga-matchday-5-review-10-goal-game-historic-records-crucial-wins-protests-and-more/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bundesliga-matchday-5-review-10-goal-game-historic-records-crucial-wins-protests-and-more/#respond Mon, 29 Sep 2025 09:49:39 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=103789 Matchday 5 in the Bundesliga may just be the most bonkers yet. We witnessed a 10-goal game, historic records broken, crucial first wins, and so much more. Here is your review and all the talking points from matchday 5 in the Bundesliga.

Historic Harry

Harry Kane scored a brace on Friday evening as Bayern Munich comfortably brushed aside Werder Bremen to truly kick off the Oktoberfest season. While Bayern are enjoying their best start to a Bundesliga campaign since 2016, Harry Kane also wrote his name into history once again.

The Englishman’s two goals brought his overall Bayern tally to 100 in just 104 games. He is now the quickest player to register 100 goals for a club in Europe’s top five leagues. He surpasses both Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) and Erling Haaland (Manchester City), who both achieved 100 goals in 105 games. With 10 Bundesliga goals already this season, Kane appears to be in the form of his life as Bayern go marching on.

The game against Bremen also saw Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka make their 300th Bundesliga appearance, whilst youngster Tom Bischof was granted his first start for Bayern

Bayern are now eight wins from eight in the Bundesliga and face Eintracht Frankfurt away in matchday 6.

The 10-Goal Game

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Eintracht Frankfurt may just have hosted the most bizarre and entertaining game of the season as they played out a cracking (and at times hilarious) 4-6.

Gladbach are yet to win this season, have sacked their head coach, and have been woeful at defending so far. When the halftime whistle blew and Frankfurt were 5-0 up, you feared that the Eagles could easily make it double-figures. Frankfurt immediately made it 0-6 within two minutes of the restart, leaving the Gladbach fans who had stayed in the ground possibly regretting that decision.

Interim Gladbach coach Eugen Polanski looked dumbfounded as he witnessed the lack of defending. For a top-flight side, it was shambolic.

However, what transpired almost saved Polanski’s blushes and possibly gives him the most credit at full-time. Gladbach and Frankfurt seemingly reserved roles as the home side went on to score four second-half goals whilst the away side took the role of not defending.

During the game I was in shock,” Polanski answered when a reporter asked him what words he found for the team at the half. “It was my job at the half to tell the team that things could be different. After that lifeless first half that doesn’t work at Bundesliga level, it got a little loud at the break.”

“That was a desolate performance by the team,” BMG sporting director Roland Virkus told Sky Germany. “We lacked everything you need in football and were rightly 0-5 down at half-time. It must be said that the team made progress after the break, but one can’t sugarcoat a game like this. [Interim head coach] Eugen [Polanski] retains our support, but we all have to take a look at this together.“

Gladbach remain winless, and bizarrely, Frankfurt have conceded eight goals in two games.

Dortmund Dominance

Borussia Dortmund continued their unbeaten start to the season with an impressive 0-2 win away at Mainz 05.

With the win, BVB stay second, are looking like the early contenders to Bayern, and even set a new Bundesliga record.

Niko Kovač’s side were in the lead at half-time for the 10th league game in a row – a new milestone in Germany’s top flight.

Daniel Svensson opened the scoring for Borussia Dortmund, netting his second Bundesliga goal for his new club after capping off a fine counter-attack after Mainz’ Paul Nebel hit Gregor Kobel’s post at the other end. Karim Adeyemi then doubled Dortmund’s lead in the 40th minute after another superb counter-attack, giving BVB a 0-2 lead.

Speaking after the game, Kovač commended his team’s performance: “The team played very disciplined and organised for 90 minutes. We scored the goals at the right time and were a bit lucky with the shot that hit the post, which led us to score our first goal right afterwards. I saw a team today that finished the game the way we should on the road. We didn’t concede anything else – or at least very little. So I’m very happy and proud of the boys that they rewarded themselves with this performance.”

Around The Grounds

Union Berlin and Hamburg played out a 0-0 draw, but the main story came from the stands. Union fans were protesting the pre-match deployment of the federal police against supporters of the Berlin club. HSV fans were also protesting the late kick-off on Sunday evening, having made the two-hour train journey to the capital. Banners expressed that the late kick-off should only be reserved for those competing in European competitions. Given the notorious Deutsche Bahn delays, the protests seem justified.

FC Heidenheim secured their first win of the season as they beat FC Augsburg 2-1. FCA drop to 16th as the pressure mounts on head coach Sandro Wagner.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Bayer Leverkusen (1-2 vs St. Pauli), RB Leipzig (0-1 vs VfL Wolfsburg), and VfB Stuttgart (1-2 vs FC Köln). SC Freiburg and TSG Hoffenheim played out a 1-1 draw.

Preview | Bayern Munich vs Werder Bremen: Can Bayern extend winning run? https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bayern-munich-vs-werder-bremen/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bayern-munich-vs-werder-bremen/#respond Fri, 26 Sep 2025 07:37:41 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=103597 Bayern Munich have the chance to make it eight wins from eight in the Bundesliga on Friday night when the men from the Weser travel south to the Allianz Arena. Will the Bayern train go marching on, or will Bremen cause an upset and truly kickstart their mixed start to the campaign?

Bayern Munich

With seven wins from their opening seven games, Bayern are having their best start to a season since 2018/19 under the guidance of the now Dortmund head coach Niko Kovać – The last time they went eight from eight was under Carlo Ancelotti in 2016.

The history books are also on Bayern’s side for Friday’s game. The Bavarians have lost just one of their last 31 Bundesliga matches against Bremen, which came at the Allianz Arena back in January of last year.

Whilst the three points are always the most important, it could be a historic evening for Bayern themselves. Harry Kane, who seemingly can’t stop scoring, is just two goals away from becoming the fastest player from Europe’s top five leagues to reach 100 goals for a club this century. Currently on 98 goals in 103 appearances, Kane will surpass the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland with a brace against Bremen. Additionally, both Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are set to make their 300th Bundesliga appearance.

In terms of team news, there are no fresh injury concerns as Bayern are still without the likes of Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala, Hiroki Ito, and Josip Stanišić. Kim Min-jae remains a doubt for the game, having picked up a knock against Hoffenheim.

Though many will have Bayern as favourties, Vincent Kompany is wary of Bremen’s attacking play:

“They’re trying to dominate, play quick combinations through the middle – not many do that to such an extreme. That has a lot to do with the coach.”

Werder Bremen

Under new head coach Horst Steffen, Bremen have had a mixed start to the campaign. With four points from four, the Green-whites have shown signs of fabulous attacking play but also defensive frailties. Perhaps two games that highlight this the most are their 0-4 win away at Borussia Monchengladbach and their 3-3 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Bremen bolstered their attacking options during the summer transfer window, particularly with the signing of Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, though the Nigerian is yet to reach the form everyone knows he is capable of.

In terms of team news, Bremen will be without first-choice goalkeeper, Mio Backhaus, who has had to pull out of the squad due to a shoulder injury.

Ahead of the game, Horst Steffen provided details on how they hope to stop Bayern:

“We’re travelling to Munich with a bold attitude. We’re certainly only going to have around 30 percent possession and going to have to do a lot of defending. That’s Bayern Munich – they’re a top team in Europe. Hoffenheim showed signs of how you can do it.”

Malik Tillman talks life at Bayer Leverkusen and the Bundesliga: “I know I can do more” https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/malik-tillman-talks-life-at-bayer-leverkusen-and-the-bundesliga-i-know-i-can-do-more/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/malik-tillman-talks-life-at-bayer-leverkusen-and-the-bundesliga-i-know-i-can-do-more/#respond Mon, 22 Sep 2025 13:25:54 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=103444 Speaking to Bild, Malik Tillman talks about settling in at Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga, and his performances so far.

The USA international had an unorthodox start to life at B04. The attacking midfielder was absent from pre-season due to representing the USA in the Gold Cup, and then missed the start of the season due to a calf injury.

However, Tillman has since scored twice in three Bundesliga games as Leverkusen themselves have experienced an unusual start to the campaign.

Tillman scored in the derby against Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, but ultimately ended drawing the game.

On the one hand, Gladbach did well; we’re simply still missing a few certain processes, the combinations. These will naturally come from games, from training, from a certain game plan, but over time, we simply have to find that rhythm. Of course, we also want it to happen as quickly as possible, but sometimes things like that just take time.”

Asking if he hasn’t quite settled into life at B04 yet because of the transition from the Dutch Eredivisie to the Bundesliga, Tillman had other thoughts:

“Actually, the adjustment isn’t too difficult, I’d say. Sure, it’s different. The pace of the game is different, the tackling is tough, but I think I’m ready for it; I can keep up.”

However, Tillman is not one to dodge self-criticism and understands that he can still give more:

“I’m not yet satisfied with what I’ve shown so far. I know I can do more, I know I have to do more. That, too, will come with time.”

Ultimately, Tillman isn’t too concerned by the way Leverkusen have started the campaign.

“It doesn’t mean much. We’re still at the beginning. The season is long; a lot can still happen. And I also believe that things will improve for us over time.”

With two goals in three Bundesliga appearances already, it’s clear that Tillman has a lot to give at Leverkusen, and the playmaker could be key to future success this season.

Bundesliga matchday 4 review: Harry Kane hat-trick, first wins, Gladbach goal, and more https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bundesliga-matchday-4-review-harry-kane-hat-trick-first-wins-gladbach-goal-and-more/ https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/2025/bundesliga-matchday-4-review-harry-kane-hat-trick-first-wins-gladbach-goal-and-more/#respond Mon, 22 Sep 2025 07:49:28 +0000 https://www.getfootballnewsgermany.com/?p=103424 Matchday 4 in the Bundesliga gave us many season firsts, a seven-goal thriller, yet another Harry Kane hat-trick, and so much more. Here is your review and all the major talking points from matchday 4 in the Bundesliga.

Harry Hat-trick

Following on from his brace in the Champions League midweek, Harry Kane notched his 9th Bundesliga hat-trick as Bayern Munich beat TSG Hoffenheim 1-4 in Sinsheim. In doing so, Kane also broke a new Bundesliga record. Following on from his first goal, the England captain went on to convert two penalties – this is the first time in the league’s history that a player has converted all of their first 17 penalties.

Vincent Kompany made five changes from the side that beat Chelsea in midweek, but it did little to disrupt their early-season flow. It was one-way traffic from the majority of the game, and a late Joshua Kimmich own goal did little to dampen the spirits as Bayern maintained top spot and their 100% record.

Union Upset Frankfurt

Union Berlin pulled off a shock result on Sunday evening as they came out 3-4 winners away at Eintracht Frankfurt. The Eagles had hammered Turkish champions Galatasaray 5-1 in midweek and were favourites to do something similar against Union.

However, a front-three masterclass from Union took Frankfurt and possibly the league by surprise.

Summer recruit, Ilyas Ansah, got Union going with a superb finish and bringing his season record to four goals in as many games. Scotsman Oliver Burke then doubled Union’s lead just past the 30-minute mark, with Union only registering around 30% possession. Frankfurt did manage to pull one back before halftime, but it couldn’t stop what was to come.

Two goals in three minutes from Oliver Burke not only secured his hat-trick, but put Union in a commanding lead with 30 minutes still to play. Burke’s second was a fantastic towering header, and his third was a delicate chip over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Can Uzun and Jonathan Burkardt (his first for Frankfurt) scored two goals late on, but Union hung on for a famous three points.

Speaking after the game, Union head coach Steffen Baumgart, who was sent off for complaining about Burkardt’s penalty goal, spoke frankly after the match:

I’m sorry, but actually I’m not sorry because I don’t want to hold back on my emotions. I kicked the paper onto the pitch because I saw others do it. The lads will have to do without me next week.

Gladbach Goal!

Music to the ears of Borussia Mönchengladbach fans, they’ve finally registered a goal this season, and it’s come at the expense of their rivals, Bayer Leverkusen.

Gladbach went into Sunday’s game as underdogs but put on a valiant performance and scored late on to secure a much-needed point and first goal of the campaign. Following last week’s 0-4 loss to Bremen, Gladbach looked refreshed under the interim management of Eugen Polanski.

The former Polish international declared himself largely satisfied with his team’s performance, which sees them move to two points, but now with the opportunity to really kickstart their campaign.

After the game, Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus confirmed that Polanski is being considered as a permanent candidate.

Polanski himself thought Gladbach were unlucky not to win it:

With a little luck, we could have won,” Polanski continued, referencing Jens Castrop’s disallowed goal in the 23rd minute. “In the Regionalliga, that goal would have counted. I ended my playing career [in 2018] when there was no VAR, and I’m very happy about that. Now, I have to put up with this crap.

Around the Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Hamburg secured their first win of the campaign in what seemed like an early six-pointer against FC Heidenheim. Both clubs occupied the bottom two spots going into this won, but it’s HSV who move away following a convincing 2-1 win. Goals on either side of the half from Luka Vušković and Rayan Philippe were enough to get HSV over the line. A late consolation for Heidenheim did little as they look to already be in danger of relegation.

Borussia Dortmund stay within two points of Bayern after overcoming VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 on Sunday night. A first-half wonder striker from Karim Adeyemi was enough for Niko Kovač’s side as they go back to second in the table.

Elsewhere, there were wins for RB Leipzig (3-1 vs FC Köln), VfB Stuttgart (2-0 vs St. Pauli), SC Freiburg (0-3 vs Werder Bremen), and Mainz 05 (1-4 vs FC Augsburg).
